/Glitch Festival 2015
Curated by Ciara Scanlan + Matthew Nevin of MART.
29th May – 6th June 2015
PREVIEW May 29th @ 6PM
Location : RUA RED & MART

I am showing 2 new pieces of work at \Glitch as part of my current exploration of emotion, catharsis and authenticity in the digital age. Both pieces are video installations

Empathy with the Flesh (2015) Video Still

Borrowing from ‘youtube tutorials’ and other viewer generated content, this video work seems to take the format of an instructional video -  instead offering material related ‘pointless’ sensory experiences. The work refers to compulsive viewing, that like ‘peeling a scab’ might elicit visceral experiences of disgust or satisfaction and relief. Employing affect, visual pleasure and displeasure the work aims to raise questions around how and why we invest our time, emotion and attention in the digital age. The referenced format of user generated content has more recently been co-opted for advertising purposes, particularly aimed towards children - for instance the highest youtube earner of 2014 reportedly earned $5million ‘just by opening toy packages’. This video installation aims to raise questions such as how are our experiences constructed through the type of imagery produced in hyper-mediatised late-capitalism?

Every Now and then I Fall Apart (2015)

This piece explores the possibilities of emotional authenticity and alienation in the digital context, through nostalgic melodrama as both cathartic act and self-parody.  Through this piece I hope to raise questions such as: how are our experiences constructed and produced through our increasingly intense, intimate and pervasive relationship to popular media? Are authentic expressions and identifications possible in this context, or is our emotional investment constantly co-opted in the digital economy?
